Welcome to the Early Childhood Education Program at Broughton High School!
Early Childhood Education, a two-credit course, prepares students for careers working with children birth through age 12. Work-based learning comprises 50% of the required course work. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for these courses at Broughton High School are field trips, job shadowing, service learning, internships, and school-based enterprises.
Students who complete both levels of Early Childhood Education maybe be recognized as “teachers” in accordance with B.S 110-9118; 143 B- 168.3. The Child Care Regulations of NC define “teacher” as the caregiver who has responsibility for planning and implementing the daily program of activities for each group of children in a day care facility. These completers are entitled to the same benefits and are bounded by the same requirements as other teachers in child care centers.

In Early Childhood Education Level II, we will cover the following objectives:
- Understand goals and strategies for planning and managing early childhood programs.
- Interpret licensing requirements and staffing strategies for early childhood programs.
- Analyze early childhood curricula based on developmentally appropriate practice.
- Create elements of early childhood environments based on developmentally appropriate practice.
- Apply procedures and strategies for working with special groups of children.
- Understand strategies for handling guidance issues.
- Understand issues affecting the development of children.
- Exemplify educational and personal preparation and strategies for obtaining and maintaining employment in early childhood centers.
- Evaluate written and oral presentation skills used in early childhood professional settings.
