Welcome to the Early Childhood Education Program at Broughton High School!
Early Childhood Education, a two-credit course, prepares students for careers working with children birth through age 12. Work-based learning comprises 50% of the required course work. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for these courses at Broughton High School are field trips, job shadowing, service learning, internships, and school-based enterprises.
Students who complete both levels of Early Childhood Education maybe be recognized as “teachers” in accordance with B.S 110-9118; 143 B- 168.3. The Child Care Regulations of NC define “teacher” as the caregiver who has responsibility for planning and implementing the daily program of activities for each group of children in a day care facility. These completers are entitled to the same benefits and are bounded by the same requirements as other teachers in child care centers.

In Early Childhood Education Level I, we will cover the following objectives:
- Focus on character related to personal growth and success.
- Understand professional skills and responsibilities required of early childhood professionals.
- Evaluate observation and teaching methods used in early childhood education.
- Identify techniques for communicating expectations and guiding behavior.
- Understand and apply policies and procedures for a healthy and safe environment for young children.
- Understand and exemplify principles and domains of child development, developmental characteristics of children, and theories of child development.
- Apply and evaluate developmentally appropriate activities and programs for children from birth to school-age.
- Recognize and explain the contributions and influence of history on early childhood education.
- Consider career trends, opportunities and options within early childhood education.
